Neocon: James raises an interesting question: what is your intent in defending the religious icons. I've not followed the thread fully, but even restricting the icons to culturally meaningful ones.

I do see even the 10 C. as promoting a particular brand(s) of religion under public power. You do too, I recall, but a 'bearable' amount. When there are so many meaningful ways to proslytize ethical behavior without religious behavior, why do we continue to do wrong [even a little] when the question has arisen?

Using learned ethical material for religious proslytizing is well documented in Paul's use of the unknown god at Corinth. This is a valuable product of public schools: there is already a base of common knowledge that can be used to differentiate the religious [or other] particulars.
