The issue of owning the motherboard market is not who manufactures the board, but who makes the chipset. 75%-85% of all motherboards made use an Intel chipset. The choice of chipset controls the features and design of the motherboard.

This if Intel says something isn't going to happen (like PC133 for example) then anyone who tries to produce it is going out on a dangerous limb. If you look back in the thread you can see a lot about intel stopping FIC from producing a chipset supporting PC133 using licencing restrictions.
