Perhaps you should go back an review the story. The story was an investigative piece... it was not an announcement by Cisco and in fact CSCO did not comment. How can you pin this on the company as vaporware????

As for ATM, industry and technology changes. The companies that can not quickly adapt to this change will suffer the most. CSCO, it would appear, is making some strategic moves where it sees ATM as less important in the core than POS. It may be that CSCO wants LU/ASND to continue to spin their wheels in the ATM space leaving the IP core, edge, and enterprise space to CSCO...for the time being. Granted there is a lot of competition in the IP core but it's a new market and no clear winners - yet. I belive the decisions on the ATM switch were strategic. I do agree that it was poor to announce something they didn't have but perhaps the goal was simply to delay the market? Ever consider that?
