*Extra* Making Use of Web Usage Numbers

Don't forget to read this morning's regular edition of SiliconStreet.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Never mind black-and-white statistics -- like whether or not 3Com (COMS:Nasdaq) has gotten its act together. That's news you can get when the Sick Man of Networkingland reports its fourth-quarter earnings Tuesday. Same for the memory-chip pricing, ascertainable from Micron Technology's (MU:NYSE) third-quarter update today.

No, the real action for tech-stock investors this week is tomorrow's release of Internet usage numbers for May by Media Metrix (MMXI:Nasdaq). Remember, it was the gloomy data from April that added to the general funk for Net stocks a month ago. This closely watched barometer of the health of a still precariously valued sector should set the tone for whether Net mania surges or slides.

A spokeswoman for the New York-based measurement firm -- newly public, with a stock that's more than doubled since its May initial public offering -- says she hasn't even looked at the numbers yet and wouldn't disclose them if she had. The report discusses usage, measured most relevantly by unique visitors, at the top Web sites in the land. Usage is to Web sites what viewership is to broadcast networks. Needless to say, growth in visitors is good while absence of growth (or, shudder, a decline) is bad.
