Aavid Launches Thermal Solutions for Cooling Memory
One-Stop RIMM Solution Includes Attachments and State-of-the-Art Interface Material

CONCORD, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 1999--Aavid Thermal Products, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aavid Thermal Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:AATT - news), the world's leader in thermal management for power and digital electronics, today announced new cooling solutions for RIMM(tm) modules. These cooling solutions are Aavid's launch of its Cool Covers(tm) family of solutions. Initially configured for desktop computer applications, the Cool Covers(tm) family will expand to include cooling video and modem boards, as well as CPU and other electronic PCB modules that require thermal, mechanical, and EMI solutions.

Optimized Solution Cuts Customer Costs

According to Aavid Marketing Manager Christopher Chapman, ''Aavid focuses on the business challenges as well as the thermal challenges facing our customers. Our engineers worked with memory designers to develop a low-cost solution for RIMM modules that protects, cools, and manages board-level packaging. The thermal solution has to contact multiple memory devices on a PCB for heat transfer. It also has to protect them from shipping and handling and add mechanical stability to the module.

''To meet these challenges, Aavid is also introducing its CSP Pad(tm) interface material that has the most compression of any gap filling interface material. Plus, it absorbs tolerance stack-up without excessive stress to the chip components while insuring high thermal conductivity,'' said Chapman.

Aavid also offers other low cost interface materials from Bergquist, Raychem, and Chomerics as standard options.

Chapman added, ''To support high-volume automated manufacturing, Cool Covers utilize industry-standard holes that accept a multitude of hardware attachments. For low-volume or manual assembly, Aavid offers the new heat sinks with four easy installing spring-loaded Push Pins(tm) that meet the demands of the cost-conscious computer peripheral market. And Aavid's Cool Covers' design as a drop-in cooling solution supports customer changes in chip sets.''

Pricing and Availability

Aavid's Cool Cover RIMM memory cooling solutions are $1.38 (US) a unit for quantities of 25,000 FOB Santa Ana with a six week lead time, which includes two Cool Covers with interface material; brass Push Pins are an additional $0.18 per set. They are also available in prototype quantities. For additional pricing, technical specifications, and assistance contact Aavid's customer service department, 603-528-3400.
