Sort of OT?

A bit of market research.

Disk I/O is often the limiting factor in computer performance, rather than CPU/Memory issues.

I propose to manufacture a small box which plugs in your IDE cable between Computer and hard disk. It has 72 or 144 Mb of Rambus, and an ASIC inside, and for safety a small Battery, enough to power its circuitry and your hard disk for 60 seconds if the power fails.

It predicts which data you will use soon, based on history, and reads it into memory, whenever the hard disk would be idle.

It also buffers data to be written to the disk later, so your system thinks that this happens almost instantly, and does not wait.

The box costs around $300. It makes an IDE drive perform better than a fast SCSI, and takes 5 minutes to install.

Who would buy one?
