"Audiences Can't Resist Austin"
June 13, 1999

Austin Powers shagged the box office rotten, baby.

The Spy Who Shagged Me not only defeated the former box office heavyweight The Phantom Menace, but set a number of records in doing so. The second Powers' estimated $54.7 million take is not just the biggest June opening in history (beating Batman Forever's $52.7 million in 1995), but also the highest first-weekend gross ever for a comedy (thankfully dethroning 1998's The Waterboy, which earned $39.4 million). In one weekend, The Spy Who Shagged Me also out-earned the entire gross of its 1997 predecessor, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, which took in a total of $53.9 million domestically.
