Actually, I agree with that assessment, and I was trying to figure out the best way to put it into words. You did a fine job of it.
And remember, there is no war to win. Just lots of little battles. Gates won this battle. He's slowly losing the next one. Just as Jobs was vulnerable, so is Gates.
Assume (not that it would happen) that AOL switches the browser from IE to Netscape. Gates loses 17 million users and his share goes from about 55% to about 15% of IE browser penetration. WOW!
This hurts him tremendously. Figure then that as OS becomes obsolete due to browsers and LINUX continues it roll....MSFT becomes what IBM was. A shell of its former self. Gates is ousted...and they bring in ? This, of course, would occur over a 5-8 year time frame. But the cracks are already appearing. Quality means more now in PC software. Everyday people are realizing it now. What good is a PC that crashes every day? What good is memory that is used up even after you shut down programs? It's crazy, and MSFT has yet to fix it.
