El & Thread:

FYI, here's the latest scuttlebutt about CPQ in the Rumor Central column in today's PC Week:

"Will Compaq Nation turn its lonely eyes to ... Jack Shields? That's the word from a Tabby tipster who reports that Shields is in the running for the Houstonians' vacant CEO spot. El Gato's first question: Who the heck is Jack Shields? The answer: an ex-Digital executive and one of the company's first 100 employees, who started Digital's services business but bailed out after a falling-out with Ken Olsen over the initial Alpha strategy. After that, Shields did a stint in the early '90s as CEO and president of Computervision. Shields, contacted late last week, said the rumor was news to him and that he's not interested.
Another subject of much speculation is David House, who stepped down as president and CEO of Nortel Networks last week. House, who's done stints at both HP and Intel, would be a natural to lead either Compaq or HP. But speculation is all Rumor Central has right now, as both companies remain as tight-lipped as ever. As one Compaq insider noted, "Everyone was told at DECUS that talking to the press would be career-limiting."
Compaq's toughest job must belong to its Webmaster. With all the executive departures, the management team page at Compaq's site changes faster than His Hirsuteness can hit the reload button on his browser.
With the business shake-up proceeding apace, Compaq's product teams aren't standing still. A source told the Tabby to expect a line of Compaq-branded thin-client terminals, which Compaq will offer to customers that purchase its Windows NT servers supporting Microsoft's Terminal Server Edition or Citrix's MetaFrame."

Have a nice evening folks.
