Since I want to stay on topic, here is a story that centers around gold...and it is absolutely true. For several years a group of my friends and I would go to the Follow's Camp Blue Grass Festival in the San Gabriel mountains just north of L.A. We would camp for 3 nights right on the river that went through the camp. They had a little general store where you could buy gold panning pans. They also sold little vials of gold flakes for $10. I bought a pan and also bought a vial of gold flakes. Then I went down to the river and started panning for gold. All the time that I was panning, all of my friends were laughing at me. about an hour into the endeavor I put a couple of flakes in the pan and said "hey guys, I think I got some". Everybody came running and confirmed my discovery. I gave up my pan to one of my friends and put a couple of flakes in that one as well. Then I sat on the shore while I watch all six friends pan for phantom gold for 4 hours. They figured it out when they noticed that instead of joining the gold mania, I was watching fromt he sidelines with a shit eating grin on my face.
