David,

Was hoping that article would wake up the market... After seeing what happened today, I'm not so sure what will open their eyes. AFIS up 1/2 on 10.6k shares (5.3 real shares), everyone else down... jeeeeezzzz. We need some success stories with in the sector. Been, and still looking...

Anyway...

Gemplus shapes up for the millennium

Gemplus is undertaking a series of organisational and personnel changes designed to take the company into the new millennium.

The company has set up Smart Corp, an independent group designed to ensure that Gemplus is at the forefront of the smart card applications market. Smart Corp will focus on merger and acquisition activity to place products and services developed by Gemplus into new vertical markets. The group will be led by Daniel le Gal and Dr Marc Lassus and the initial focus will be on access control and transportation markets. Gemplus says that Skidata, acquired by Gemplus in 1997, will play a key part in this strategy.

In another move, China has been added as a region in its own right alongside South East Asia, The Americas and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa). All of these regions report to president and CEO Daniel Le Gal. Four previously independent divisions - manufacturing, research and development, product and marketing - merge as one division led by Bertrand Cambou, who joins Gemplus from Motorola.

On the personnel front, Lassus becomes chairman of the supervisory board of Gemplus SCA, replacing Dr Hasso von Falkenhausen, who is retiring. Lassus will lead Gemplus' development of international markets and will head merger and acquisition activity. Chou Fang Soong has been promoted to executive vice-president for the South East Asia region, while Serge Barthelemy is appointed as executive vice-president for the Greater China region. Remy de Tonnac, previously responsible for the Asia region, becomes executive vice-president of the Americas region. De Tonnac will be based in California, US.
