James, here is one for you: one of the marks of importance is durability. We do not judge that which is ephemeral as important, but only that with a lasting effect. Hence, a rational ethic would require the individual to subordinate himself to society, and cultivate those talents and virtues by which he can make contributions to society, since the only chance his actions have of enduring are as part of an enterprise larger than himself. Since the good order of society also encompasses the well- being of its constituent members, it is reasonable for each to consider it his responsibility to make provision for himself and his dependents. Since society functions better if decisions are decentralized, so that those most acquainted with a situation, or likeliest to be affected by it, judge, it is better for society to encourage individual responsibility and enterprise.
