Neo, old boy, a somewhat convoluted post. Consistency, dude, consistency...

Hence, a rational ethic would require the individual to subordinate himself to society,

El wrongo, amigo. That's exactly what happened in Nazi Germany during the second World War. And also one of the basic tenants of socialism/communism (statism). A rational and proper society sanctifies the rights of its individual members.

Since the good order of society also encompasses the well- being of its constituent members, it is reasonable for each to consider it his responsibility to make provision for himself and his dependents. Since society functions better if decisions are decentralized, so that those most acquainted with a situation, or likeliest to be affected by it, judge, it is better for society encourage individual responsibility and enterprise.

No argument from me there, and also, (if you think about it), a direct contradiction of your original statement above.
