Grackles (boat-tailed) are a large 12-14" irridescent blackbird. Some real beauties on the San Antonio Episcopal cathedral lawn. Strutting (like all blackbirds) murderers en masse of lawn beetles and army worms. Beady killer eyes with golden rings. Starlings are the smaller prancing assassins (7"-9"). They grack too. Cowbirds are even smaller (5-6") nasty peckers up of unconsidered trifles. Move in on songbirds and law their eggs and leave. The young cowbird pushes the rightful heirs out on the lawn (like cuckoos). There are many other blackbirds (magpies, crows, ravens, redwings (swamp singers extraordinaire). All the birds (of a feather) gather in a catawba tree (to eat the caterpillars) and grack. They cover cars with their excreta. And chatter incessantly like law students.
