Democrat does not automatically equal liberal, and republican does not equal conservative, right? Clinton is moderate, so are ALL the serious candidates from both parties. Some democrats were racists, but I don't think that most of the democrats from the south who voted against the civil rights acts were "liberals". They were conservatives by definition - they wanted to keep things the way they were. Most politicians in the south were historically democrats because Lincoln was (as you point out) a Republican. You could not hardly get elected in the south if you were from the carpet bagger party (aka Repubs). If Byrd was in the KKK, that's very sad. I've never liked him after he moved several huge federal agencies to the other side of a highway, to put them in his state. But of course there are racists on both sides. Consider the current Republican leader in the senate, Trent Lott, from Mississippi. He's given a fair number of speeches to several openly racist organizations, and he's not trying to reform them, he supports them! And now many of those old democrats are showing their true colors as they switch to the republican party. My views are not because I'm just some person who hates the south, that is where I grew up. What say you to Lott? And we should of course carry this offline so as not to waste other people's time. -nick
