The concept of Dell being 'just another boxmaker' in a business that anyone can easily enter is finished. E-machines cannot stand a chance in %^&& of ever getting this far. A few moments of thinking about what is involved here. We are talking phone lines mostly and foreign ones at that... So to even start a similar operation we need people who speak German , French, Italian, Dutch and even English.(G) Victoria G?? Sorry, I don't know any except a Spanish speaking Peruvian out in Calif or the famous Dutchman,Paul Van Wijk. Lets try the virtual integration with some nearby people. Dave ( no last name) unlisted phone # Mr and Mrs Betty Lester no first name) Mark Le Fan ( no wife's name, unlisted #) Mrs Cherry () has two phone lines, no first name) Mr Tucker ( no first name, seldom home ) So give me another year and I may be able to get all the names right and scrounge some of those unlisted numbers and write them down in a phone book. But unless I put that data in the computer in an organized fashion as Dell does there is no way that I can set up a business with repeat sales or buying preferences. And with all the data involved I see no threat whatever from the Set-top box people. Dell has the people with years of experience to do the job efficiently. Summary: The basic concepts so easily expressed in a book become a very complicated thing in real life. So Michael is giving no secrets away by publishing his book since it takes years of work to implement the Be Direct concept. But it does point the way...
