Telenordia Selects Newbridge Networks LMDS Solution: Newbridge Wins Key
Account in the Nordic Region

MAIDENHEAD, U.K., Jun 22, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE via COMTEX) --

Industry-Leading Broadband Wireless Solution Enables
 Telenordia to Penetrate Emerging Markets

Broadband wireless industry leader Newbridge Networks (NYSE:NN)
(TSE:NNC) today announced that it has been selected by Telenordia for
the implementation of a local multipoint distribution service (LMDS)
trial network.

After successful trials deployment of services is scheduled to commence
this month, with full deployment throughout Sweden the beginning of
2000, or as soon as Telenordia is granted a LMDS license. Telenordia,
based in Sweden, is a full service new generation service provider
operating within Sweden and Finland.

Telenordia, already an important Newbridge(r) customer, has a
nation-wide broadband, multiservice network -- based on the
industry-leading MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch.

LMDS is a high frequency broadband wireless system operating in the 28
GHz spectrum. The Newbridge LMDS solution will enable Telenordia to
increase its competitiveness, expand its customer base and
differentiate its service offerings by cost-effectively delivering
data, Internet, voice, video and multimedia services using a
statistically multiplexed point-to-multipoint distribution systems for
maximum spectral efficiency. Newbridge will also provide Telenordia
with a comprehensive professional services portfolio that delivers
product management and customer site support right through the
equipment installation and service deployment process.

"After extensively researching the vendor community, we selected the
Newbridge solution because they deliver both the technology and
business and technical support necessary to enable us to capitalize on
the market for premium quality broadband wireless service
applications," said Tord Topsholm, LMDS project manager, Telenordia.
"The Newbridge multiservice platform and end-to-end network and service
management capabilities ensure that we no longer need to rely on the
incumbent operator for 'first-mile' access, providing us with superior
control over the quality of our service portfolio."

"Newbridge understands that successful LMDS network deployments demand
a partnership between the service provider and the equipment
manufacturer," said Pearse Flynn, executive vice president and general
manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Newbridge Networks. "We are
working closely with Telenordia to ensure that its LMDS network
provides the flexibility and scalability to move quickly on
revenue-generating market opportunities."

Recent research from leading market research firms points to an
explosive market opportunity:

-- According to leading market research firm Strategis, the global
broadband wireless market will generate revenues of more than US
 $10 billion by 2003 and US $28 billion by 2008;

-- The Pioneer Group forecasts that the LMDS services market in the
United States alone will grow from US $103 million in 1998 to
nearly US $8.5 billion in 2007, representing a compound annual
 growth rate of 63 percent;

-- Frost & Sullivan's April 1999 projection for LMDS service in the
next three years is approximately triple that of Pioneer Group.

The comprehensive Newbridge broadband wireless solution for LMDS is a
multiservice network comprising base station and customer premise
equipment. A base station, consisting of the industry-leading
MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switches along with
point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location
that collects all traffic to and from customers within a given wireless
coverage area. It is also the linking point between the customer and
the network backbone. Customer premise equipment includes transceivers
and network interface units (NIUs), which support a full range of
services. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager manages both the
wireless and wireline portions of the Telenordia network, providing
billing, statistics and maintenance support. The solution uses time
division multiple access (TDMA) technology to enable service providers
to effectively share bandwidth among a number of users, promoting the
efficient use of spectrum and enabling service providers to
cost-effectively address a large variety of customer requirements. TDMA
is optimal for both variable rate connections -- where potentially
hundreds of Ethernet or other bursty traffic users can share bandwidth
up to wire speeds -- and fixed data rate connections. Frequency
division multiple access (FDMA), also supported by the Newbridge LMDS
solution to provide end users with dedicated high bandwidth
connections.
