[First post - Alcatel]

My first stop was the Alcatel booth. It took some minutes just to find the ADSL area. They had one guy there giving a demo on a single monitor. He did not have a standard German accent. He told me that he was from Alcatel Belgium. He is open to questions and I have his e-mail address:
delbrouf@btmaa.bel.alcatel.be if you have questions for him.

So the demo had nothing to compare from modem to modem of different speeds. The people watching were 3 people deep. Finally, after a few minutes somebody must have removed their shoes because the place really vacated. I had my chance to go in and talk to the guy.

On the wall of their booth they have a black modem hanging with telephone lines going in and out. (The thing looked like my telephone answering machine at home. I looked for a red blinking light indicating messages waiting.). Next to the modem was a series of four chips all set in a plastic casing, and to the upper right was a monitoring screen with a version of Navigator running.

I started the conversation with something like. SO HOW FAST IS THIS MODEM? Answer- a 6MB/sec version. He did point out that he only had to pull out the little wire here and place it there to get 8Mb/S. (Why were they not demonstrating the 8 Mb/S capability?) As the conversation developed he then told me how far ahead Alcatel is from all other competitors it is not even funny. He said nobody else even has their chips ready and tested. He said Alcatel is producing their own chips from their division called Alcatel_M&%tech or something like that (I could not remember). He says that Southwest Bell, Pacific Bell, and so-on have signed a contract with Alcatel for 2 million modems until year 2002. Implementation is already underway. He said the modems are under production and they are producing 1000 per day. (He said this not me!)

He went on to say that Alcatel is not going to be selling the modems but renting them, for get this, $30/month. He said one will not need a service provider or anything, it is included with the price.

SO WHO'S DMT ARE YOU USING? He said Amati's. He also said the units are available now and asked me if I wanted to buy one. (He was kidding so I didn't answer).

He also said that Alcatel has completely bypassed CAP because it is old technology. (In other words Alcatel is strictly DMT and ready).

HAVE YOU BEEN OVER TO SEE WHAT KIND OF DEMO SIEMENS IS GIVING? I WAS JUST READY TO MAKE MY WAY OVER THERE? He sort of laughed and said, don't be fooled. they really have not got their act together as to what it is they are doing. They would not even show me their equipment!

As a side note:
I was given an ADSL modem product description handout. Seven pages. Many photos of their electronics and a few technical specs (No power usage numbers; strictly a marketing promo).

I have language class I have to run off to, then dinner. So tomorrow I will write up something on the talk I had with the guy at SNI. Tschuess-Eric
