Well, we're switching around between civilized persons and civilizations.

As I recall, this all started with a discussion of civilized individuals. That was my intial understanding of what we were after. And I believe that totally uneducated persons can be very civilized. (We were also discussing universal free education as opposed to leaving part or all of the responsibility for education in private hands.)

But we drifted (something we tend to do on this thread <g>) into civilized societies and then civilization, which is what you started your response with.

Re civilization, (I will politely disregard your misspelling of the word and not make any mention of it) I would tenatatively agree with you. I would probably, after further reflection, agree that civilization requires development of a system of formal education.

But I am not ready to accept that formal education is necessary to be a civilized individual.

Would love to expound, but after I nearly missed a deadline spending too much time on line yesterday, I made myself promise myself NOT to get sucked into spending excess time on line today. So can't go further now.
