jc: If there is any truth to the rumour that CMGI were buying assets, isn't it more likely that it would be negotiating a deal to have a stake in AV before it was spun-off?

I concede that even this version does not make much sense, because COMPAQ does not need an equity partner. But perhaps there is a deal there if CMGI were prepared to pay a very good IPO price and CPQ was prepared to increase the percentage it was willing to float (adding a CMGI bloc to the bloc offered to the institutions and the market). This might give AV substantial additional capital and put some strength behind the IPO.

Whether and how this explains/justifies a 7% increase in the vlaue of COMPAQ's shares is another question.
