ST. LOUIS, Mo., March 19 (Reuter) - Zoltek Cos Inc said Wednesday it chose Abilene, Texas, as the site of expanded carbon fiber manufacturing capacity.
Zoltek said it plans to install and begin operation of three new continuous carbonization lines in Abilene in the spring and summer of this year.
The company also plans simultaneously to install two identical lines at its facility in Hungary.
Eleven additional production lines are scheduled to be installed by the company in 1998, allocated between Abilene and Zoltek's facilities near Budapest, Hungary.
Each line will have a rated capacity of approximately one million pounds of carbon fiber production per year.
Last month, Zoltek said it was on track to double its annual capacity to make carbon fibers in 1997. It said its objective is to increase annual manufacturing capacity to more than 35 million pounds of carbon fibers by 2000. The materials are used as a reinforcement in composites.
The Abilene site includes 14,000 square feet of newly constructed and immediately usable manufacturing space, along with 50 acres of land for future expansion.
The Abilene plant will employ about 65 people by the September 30 end of the current fiscal year. More than 250 people will be employed as additional production lines are added in the next sevearl years.
The carbon fibers made at Abilene will be targeted for U.S. markets, while the production in Hungary will be mainly for Europe and Asia.
"We expect this expansion in our capacity to provide a base for substantial long-term growth in revenues," Rumy said.
