Standard & Poor's makes changes to S&P 500 index

NEW YORK, June 22 (Reuters) - Network Appliance Inc., Best Buy Co. Inc. and Vulcan Materials Co. are scheduled to move to the S&P 500 Index, Standard & Poor's said Tuesday.

Network Appliance on Thursday is scheduled to replace Ascend Communications Inc., which is being acquired by Lucent Technologies Inc.

Best Buy will move from the S&P MidCap 400 to the S&P 500 on June 28, replacing AirTouch Communications Inc. Vodafone Group Plc is acquiring AirTouch.

Swift Transportation Co. will replace Best Buy in the MidCap 400.

Vulcan Materials will replace Provident Cos. Inc., which is being acquired by S&P 500 component UNUM Corp., in the S&P 500 Index on June 29.

Transaction Systems Architects Inc. will replace Vulcan in the MidCap 400.

Unitrin Inc. will replace Unisource Worldwide Inc. in the MidCap 400 on June 25, following the expiration of Georgia-Pacific Corp.'s tender offer for Unisource.

DST Systems Inc. will replace Aliant Communications Inc. in the MidCap 400 as of an as-yet undetermined date.

United Natural Foods, Atlantic Coast Airlines Holdings Inc. and Black Box Corp. will move to the S&P SmallCap 600.

Juno Lighting, Norrell Corp. and Dialogic Corp. are being replaced in the SmallCap 600.
