When I originally proposed that universal free (to the student) public education was an essential component of a civilized society, I was thinking less of the impact of education on the underprivileged than what educational policies reveal about the attitudes of the privileged. A conscious choice by the ruling class to deny the basic tools required for achievement to anyone is simply not, by the standards of our day, civilized. It is also not very bright. The complexity of our society makes it practically impossible for the uneducated to attain any substantial level of productivity, and the last thing a civilized society needs is a huge mass of unproductive, angry, individuals hanging around its edges.

It is easy to point out that we have exactly that right now, and I would be the last to argue that our attempts to provide education to all have been uniformly successful. But I don't think we could consider ourselves civilized if we didn't at least try.
