Wayne,

First of all, 50%/5% increase in home prices/average salary over past 3 years is quite inaccurate. According to an article by James Padinha (a serious inflation hawk) in thestreet.com today, average home price inflation was more like 15%. While this lags average salary raises which have been at around 10% (as that has closely tracked the CPI), the difference is not that huge. And if you consider options ...

In any case, no one is required to acquire assets. It is a choice and not a requirement and hence removed from COL calculations.

Finally, mistrusting the Govt. is a different issue altogether.
