Why Altavista? Read on.

Okay, here's my take given what I know about the portals and
search engines as somebody who works in the industry. I'm not
talking financials here since others are more qualified than I am
to do that.

Altavista's crown jewel is its search technology. The site has other
features not offered by other web portals (the translation
service at babelfish.altavista.digital.com, for example), but to
seasoned web users "Altavista" = "search". Other portals (notably
Yahoo and Netscape's Netcenter) used to use Altavista to power their
searches, but these days it seems you see "Powered by Inktomi" everywhere you see a "Search" button. Perhaps CMGI is looking to
change that. Lycos and Hotbot both utilize Inktomi's technology.

BEGIN SPECULATION:
I've never really cared for Lycos's search capabilities. It was the
first search engine I ever used, in 1994, when the URL was still a
cmu.edu address. It's gotten better, but is still not up to par
with Infoseek or Altavista. Perhaps with Altavista under its wing
CMGI might be able to strike a deal with Lycos to switch the
underlying technology behind its search capability?

That, of course, and the fact that it's a site that could be used as
a gateway to the more end-user-oriented holdings in the CMGI fold.

END SPECULATION
