As far as wanting Altavista, this makes a lot of sense to me. I've
recently thought that Compaq's Alpha chip unit and their digital
properties are the only parts of the company worth anything. I
figured they should get out of the PC business and go into the
Internet Appliance business with "Alpha Inside".

But Altavista has great search engine technology -- the only truly
scalable commercial search engine I know of besides Inktomi's. I
use www.altavista.com regularly.

Altavista could have been another Inktomi. But first Digital and
then Compaq blew it -- blew it as bad as Barnes and Noble waiting
years to spin off BNBN.

Altavista could still be an Inktomi-killer -- at least in search space.
But I don't think that's why CMGi is interested.

I think having relationships with Dell, Gateway, Compaq, and --
most importantly -- Microsoft and Intel, CMGi is really truly
interested in getting on every Wintel desktop.

Having one of the world's greatest search engines gives them the
means of routing those "desktop warriors" to all of CMGi's
commerce, content, and community sites. It is truly going after
AOL. And with the right backers, it could work.

This could be huge.

Nonetheless, we don't know if this Altavista rumor will pan out.
