arthur...is that you????

let me better explain...sometimes the back and forth loses a bit.

dell did not create the bto model. it was originated in the 60's by toyota japan.

dell applied the bto model to a manufacturing process and refined it to excellence.

this makes dell a great company.

all bto models depend on the down stream suppliers to maintain perfection.

most bto models have r+d, so down stream supply provides product to specification. example: auto industry uses r+d from supplier on generic type components, but do have proprietary parts built to their spec

dell depends totally on wintel combo. they can only proceed as fast as intc / msft allows.

true bto model works with 3-5 year product plans. if dell a "fast follower" they must react immediately to whatever intc/msft changes are made. so if dell is not an innovator, they do not know what the future brings until it is delivered to their door step. dell will remain a bto assembler, not an innovator

at some point as a company grows it must innovate and provide for their own destiny....imagine if andy grove decided that he is at a strategic inflection point and processors are no more valid then memory...absurd...but what happens to the "fast follower" dell

on this thread ibm is "the enemy", gerstner a liar, "mikey" the wunderkind....so you sign a $16b parts/r+d contract with the "enemy"....how do you bite the hand that feeds you???

dell is now and will probably be the best, most profitable pc maker in the history of the universe..........that is why i've held their stock since 96....but going forward is that enough...the desire of "mikey" to grow in five years to a $130b company is a task that may happen...providing the global economies and politics remain stable.
dell has lived through good times only...ibm is about a hundred years old...i think they survived....gotta give em credit...
