That's beyond the scope of these discussions. A lot of things 'could' derail Dell but there are a lot more plausible scenarios that won't.

Re: dell r+d and patents unique to dell, but without the wintel connection dell proprietary components don't do a hell of a lot.

By no means unique to Dell. Dell's patent portfolio has many design and utility patents that are applicable to the entire industry. I
wouldn't consider a software algorithm that detects silicon process variations and predicts impdeance matched loading characteristics a patent only Dell can use. There are many, many, many useful Dell submissions either granted or pending at the US patent office.

Re: the world does not revolve around dell....as much as you would like to convince yourself and others..

In the PC manufacturing sector, it does. In terms of stock performance over the last 10 years it does. In terms of future growth rate compared to it's competitors it does.

If we were discussing banking and finance, I'd agree, the world does not revolve around Dell<g>.
