I agree that "lack of interest" would have been preferable to "disinterest" in the sentence you object to. However, on checking two dictionaries in my possession, I find two meanings given for the word disinterest; the first, disinterestedness; and the second -- you guessed it -- lack of interest, indifference. And no indication that this usage of the word is "controversial" or even "novel." In fact, one of the dictionaries terms it a revival of an obsolete meaning.
