On the who/whom question, E, I'm inclined to think you are right. I will e-mail the guy who runs the site (no, he is not a Brit), and run your objection by him.

As for the that/which question, I will stay with "which," as long as a comma is placed after "clause." Why? Because "rather it is part of the noun clause" can stand on its own, making "which itself is the object of the verb 'wonder'" a subordinate clause. And because it just sounds more graceful to me.

BTW -- why "thusly"? Thus is quite sufficient, unless you are trying to be funny, and even then I could never understand what was supposed to be so funny about thusly. :-[
