AltaVista does have some pluses:
1) They were one of the original sites and developed their own search engine from scratch. Hence no royalty money is due anyone.

2) The AltaVista engine was used to run sites like Yahoo in the early days. Yahoo switched when they noticed that AltaVisa was interested in being more than just a rental engine. AltaVista still has some clients (business clients) that rent their search engine.

3) AltaVista has a language translator that I have not seen other sites use. It works fairly well. Allows you to read german sites, etc.

It was a tragedy to see AltaVista owned by a dead-in-the-head company like CPQ. They just let it languish.

Maybe there is some way to integrate Lycos & AltaVista. How about translating documents for starters.
