Internet Casinos-Too Relaxed for Compulsive Gamblers

Wed Jun 23 1999

Do Internet gaming sites contribute to problem and underage gambling? Gambling counselors like Tim Sweeney report that online gamblers who lose big money are still uncommon in treatment facilities. "Most of the 'casino types' don't have the [patience] to sit down and do Internet gambling"They thrive on the action, the yelling, the excitement of a casino," explains Sweeney. "We get some stockbrokers who trade stocks constantly [as a form of gambling], and these are the types that use computers for Internet gambling." Steve Schillinger, director of wagering at the World Sports Exchange site, reports: "It's very rare that we get an underage person gambling on the Internet. In the time we've been down here, two parents have called after they found out their kids had gambled. And we went ahead and sent back all the money." (If a child makes an unauthorized purchase on a parent's credit, the parent is only liable for a maximum of $50.)
