Hyundai Electronics' 72Mb RDRAM and RIMM Modules Successfully Pass Intel Validation
With additional LG Semicon manufacturing capabilities, Hyundai is in a strong position for the PC industry's September Rambus Launch
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 23, 1999-- Hyundai Electronics today announces that its 800 MHz 72-megabit (Mb) Rambus® DRAM (RDRAM®) device and RIMM(TM) modules have successfully passed Intel's Validation Test and mass production of these products are now underway.

Hyundai is also sampling its 128Mb RDRAM device, which is expected to pass Intel validation testing within a short time. With both the RDRAM device and RIMM module family validated and increased manufacturing capacity gained through the impending Hyundai Electronics/LG Semicon merger, Hyundai Electronics will be well positioned for the industry's September launch of performance desktop PCs using Rambus memory.

Farhad Tabrizi, Director, Strategic Marketing, Memory Products at Hyundai Electronics, stated, ''We're pleased to have 72Mb Rambus DRAM validation from Intel. We now intend to move forward rapidly with the production of the 800 MHz part, which is the highest speed Rambus DRAM offered today. Receiving Intel validation assures PC manufacturers that Hyundai Electronics will be ready to meet customers' RDRAM product requirements.''

Subodh Toprani, Vice President and General Manger, Industry Enabling Division, Rambus Inc., said, ''As a qualified Rambus DRAM supplier, Hyundai has made significant technology strides in a very short period of time. We are happy with the progress Hyundai has made and have confidence in their engineering and manufacturing team.''

Hyundai's 72Mb RDRAM is fabricated using a proven 0.22 micron process, which the company believes is most cost-effective at this stage of the market. The 72Mb RDRAM devices enable module capacity up to 128 megabytes (MB). Hyundai believes the introduction of these devices in mature process technology ensures the most cost-effective solution for our customers.

Hyundai's 72Mb and 128Mb RDRAM devices offer OEMs a broad range of memory configuration flexibility. The first systems to use Rambus memory are performance desktop PCs which support one to three RIMM modules allowing memory capacity from 32MB up to 256MB using 72Mb RDRAM devices, or up to 512MB using the 128Mb RDRAM devices. Most of these systems are expected to ship with 128 megabytes of memory, or a single RIMM Module of eight 128Mb RDRAMs.

About Hyundai Electronics America

Hyundai Electronics America (HEA) is a U.S. subsidiary of Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. (HEI) of Ichon, South Korea. Hyundai Electronics is an industry leader in the development, sales, marketing, and distribution of high-quality semiconductor devices including DRAM, SRAM, Flash memory, and ASICs components. Hyundai has become the world's second largest DRAM supplier according to International Data Corporation (IDC) and Semico Research Corporation as a result of the successful ramp-up of its new wafer fab in Eugene, Oregon. Hyundai's low-power SRAMs are designed for the growing market areas of telecommunications, networking, and mobile communications (including cellular telephones). Hyundai's high performance Flash memory family serves increasingly sophisticated applications that are fueling demand for larger non-volatile memory densities and faster access times; offering the industry with ease-of-use, AMD-compatible, JEDEC-compliant, single-power supply devices. All of Hyundai's memory products are manufactured using the same equipment as found in its high-volume DRAM fabs. This provides Hyundai with better production ramp flexibility and capacity to meet customer demand. HEA is headquartered at 3101 North First Street, San Jose, CA 95134.
