Yup I liked Andromeda strain too, same genre. Forbin project is on TV all the time but they renamed it "colossus", its where a military computer takes over the world.

What I like about those old films is that they weren't afraid to end on a negative note. Andromeda strain ended positively as I recall but most did not, forbin project ended negatively, same with the original planet of the apes etc.
