I didn't experience it first-hand. But there have been several documentaries lately showing all the civil defense stuff. I was particularly enthralled by a musical Tommy Tortoise outing whose refrain was "duck and cover" repeated four times.
I DID go to school (early Seventies) with a poster on the wall that gave the complete civil defense procedure, concluded by the line "Then kiss your ass goodbye".
