Re: Brain/Brawn Last Mile Plays

Frank,
Here's the list I track:

Able Telcom (ABTE) -- Can't remember why I didn't like them? Never had a position in them and it appears it was a smart move now.
---------
Amerilink (ALNK) -- I purchased them figuring they would be bought and I was right. So it's not available anymore. When I purchased them, the downside was limited.
---------
Dycom Industries (DY) -- The king of the domestic market. I had a position in DY until it ran up so fast I sold it (too soon as usual). I want to get back in, but got spoiled when I got them so low before. I would not be surprised if they bought IFCI.
---------
International FiberCom (IFCI) -- I think they will be bought. So I'm sticking with them. Normally I would not do this, but the downside seems so limited.
---------
MasTec (MTZ) -- Management problems galore. I stayed away from them and it has been a smart move too. But IF Latin America turns around, this has a lot of upside potential and, I think, limited downside. But the management part bothers me a lot.
---------
Tetra Tech (WATR) -- Well this one is confusing because they operate in four divisions. I'm sorry to say I don't know the other three well. But the hot one is what this thread is about. It's fundamentally sound and the hot division can only go up. Excellent management that is interested in ALWAYS making money. They are pretty impressive but kind of confusing from an investors standpoint.

There are some other players but while doing my DD, I somehow narrowed my choices down to those above. I really don't remember why now? All told, I believe there are only about 5 or 6 other competitors. Some of the big backbone guys like Qwest, have their own team from what I recall. As labor becomes tighter and tighter, these companies employees are going to be worth their weight in gold.

One reason I always keep asking about the CO-CO work, is because of these companies. The HFC work is a lock for them now. So I'm wondering how much work the ILECs, Data CLECs and ISPs will have for them as they deploy DSL (even the wireless guys which I know nothing about)? Obviously the twisted copper pair to the home is already there. My feelings say there will be much work to be done on upgrading the MANs and WANs that connect the twisted copper pair to the consumer. But I have no facts at this time.

No Antec is not in this space really. ANTC is the one who has end to end products for everything AT&T and Paul Allen need to do what they have to do next to their empires. If ANTC does services, it's to support their products mainly.
