iMacs on hold online

If you're hoping to buy an iMac from Apple's online store, be prepared to wait a few weeks for delivery: The company says continued strong sales of its consumer Mac have resulted in a temporary shortage at the Apple Store.
"Due to popular demand, new orders for iMacs will not ship until late July," says a message posted several days ago on the Apple Store's iMac page.
Apple spokesman Greg Jones said he wasn't aware of shortages among other iMac retailers, but he said iMacs continue to generate strong sales figures as major retail outlets across the United States sign on to sell them -- Neiman Marcus; Sears, Roebuck & Co.; and, most recently, the JC Penney catalog.
"We're seeing more and more reports that the momentum has been sustained, that iMac sales continue to be strong," Jones said. "To date, over 1 million iMacs have been sold, and we expect to see more as the product continues to move into Sears stores and other retail outlets."
Jones said he was unable to comment further on iMac sales, however, because the company recently entered a federally mandated "quiet period" before it announces its quarterly financial report on July 14. Apple's fiscal third quarter ends Friday.
