It is the first time AOL members will have access to their e-mail accounts via a handheld computer. Palm organizers will come bundled with the AOL software, and AOL will offer a package that includes a Palm organizer, e-mail software and, if necessary, a modem to its members, the companies announced in a statement Tuesday. Palm's III, IIIx and V product lines require a modem connection to access, while the wireless VII does not. A full-featured version of AOL for the Palm organizers, including access to its online content and Instant Messenger, may be offered in the future. The two companies also are exploring distribution of AOL-branded wireless handheld organizers based on 3Com's technology. Palm Computing Inc. is a subsidiary of Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com. AOL is based in Dulles, Va. Copyright 1999 Associated Press, All rights reserved. |
