Storage 99 Conference

ViewPoint Uniquely Able to Monitor and Analyze All Components of Sequent's
Switched-Fabric SAN

Delivers Proof of Performance Gains And Cost-Saving Benefits

FAIRFAX, Va., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Datametrics(R) Systems Corporation
announced today that ViewPoint(R) performance management software was selected
by Sequent to monitor the industry's only multi-path, switched-fabric fibre
channel Storage Area Network (SAN). On view in a live demo at Gartner Group's
Storage 99 conference in Scottsdale Arizona last month, the SAN was developed
by Sequent and partners EMC, Emulex, and Brocade Communications Systems Inc.
It was configured as a geographically separated, clustered system with
8 kilometers of single mode fibre connecting four cascaded switches, providing
multiple redundant paths from the cluster through the switched fabric to the
storage devices.
ViewPoint enabled attendees who viewed the SAN demonstration to directly
observe the performance of the entire SAN demonstration environment, including
the NUMA-Q(R) systems (CPU, memory, I/O), fibre channel host adapters, Brocade
switches, EMC storage and Oracle database software. "This conference was an
ideal venue for demonstrating not only the capabilities of the SAN, but also
the critical importance of being able to measure the performance of the SAN as
well as those components that rely on it," says David Freund, vice president
of marketing for Datametrics. "It also provided the first glimpse of
ViewPoint's expanding capabilities enabling unified, sophisticated performance
analysis for groups of hardware and software components as they are
increasingly being deployed by IT departments worldwide."
"Sequent's switched-fabric fiber channel SAN is literally years ahead of
the competition and offers high-speed access to enterprise storage,
centralized management, and non-disruptive scalability," says Jeff Pancottine,
vice president worldwide marketing, Sequent Computer Systems. "Datametrics'
ViewPoint software enables IT organizations to monitor complex environments
and is an essential component of our SAN solution."
ViewPoint is a multi-platform performance management and analysis product
for the entire enterprise that automatically monitors, analyzes and correlates
thousands of performance metrics simultaneously and at blazing speed, alerting
and reporting problems before they become critical. It also provides trend
analysis, prediction, and simulation modeling for capacity planning
-- anticipating problems before they even occur. ViewPoint can be used
throughout a distributed computing environment and provides detailed
performance management of business-critical systems running Compaq OpenVMS,
Unisys Corporation 2200 and A Series, Windows NT and many UNIX platforms
including Sun, HP and IBM. A leader in Windows-based performance analysis,
ViewPoint is poised to exploit the evolving WBEM and CIM standards by already
using Java technology to present critical performance analysis information
over the Internet.

ViewPoint's advanced intrinsic analysis features include:

* AutoAlert(TM) notifies users when systems violate set thresholds of
acceptable performance
* AutoAnalyze(TM) examines problems and recommends solutions
* AutoCorrelate(TM) detects causes of performance problems by
automatically discovering cause-and-effect relationships
* AutoInvestigate(TM) systematically identifies abnormal conditions
* AutoReport(TM) schedules and prints detailed system performance reports
at periodic intervals or for a specific case
* AutoWeb(TM) enables users to view system performance from a Web browser
* Data Dictionary(TM) multi-platform knowledge base supplying variable
definitions
* EventScope(TM) exposes processes or programs using excessive system
resources
* DrillDown(TM) allows users to selectspecific items for progressive
discovery
* AutoVariable(TM) builds custom dynamic variables using mathematical
expressions

ViewPoint has an open data collector interface which enables hardware
vendors, software vendors and customers to add their own performance metrics
modules, providing automatic integration with the rest of ViewPoint's
performance management capabilities. And since ViewPoint can integrate with
any SNMP-based management framework, custom metrics can be readily used with
the event automation features in Enterprise Management environments such as
BMC Patrol, Tivoli Enterprise, CA Unicenter TNG, or HP OpenView.
