Lee Masters speaks

Interactive is more than web access, says Masters

To be successful, interactive television must allow viewers to do more than just access the Web, says Lee Masters, chief executive of Liberty Digital Services. "If it's just about bringing the Internet to TV sets it's not going to work," Masters told the Washington Metropolitan Cable Club Tuesday.

Although his company and others in the interactive TV business will likely mimic Internet offerings already on personal computers, such as book and music sales and tickets for concerts and sports, they must develop additional uses that exploit TV's advantages, such as electronic classrooms and high quality video, he said. Masters also warned that many interactive TV services "will never see the light of day" if the government requires cable companies to use up their bandwidth by carrying both the digital and analog signals of all local broadcasters.
