Altavista was never the "prize". It was the hidden bonus. Compaq bought DEC for its services and high-range hardware. Sometimes its better for a company to sell parts that are distracting. Everybody talks about Portal Sites, yet AV is very far behind in features. Also as all this internet biz matures don't be surprised to see a lot of internet sites going belly-up. Who knows? Maybe in five years CMGI might not be able to give away Altavista... Either way it really doesn't matter. Compaq has about 1.5 Billion shares. What do you suppose Altavista's market cap will be. Now calculate what each shareholder would get from an IPO. Not a whole lot.
