Net2000 Communications Signs Agreement with Level 3 Communications for Transmission and Co-location of Network in Eastern U.S. Net2000's customers To Benefit From Fiber Optic Network Based Entirely On Internet Protocol Technology HERNDON, Va., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Net2000 Communications, a super- regional telecommunications provider, announced today an agreement with Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: LVLT) for backbone and co-location facilities for the first phase of Net2000's integrated network build-out. This first phase deployment extends along the East Coast from Washington D.C. to Boston. Level 3's fiber optic network will offer phased in capacity, migrating from initial DS-3 service up to eventual OC-12 connectivity between Net2000's ICP (integrated communications provider) gateways. Net2000 will co-locate its voice and data switching equipment along the fiber network in Level 3 packet gateways. Net2000 launched its state-of-the-art voice and data network earlier this month with the first switch deployment in Washington, D.C. "Level 3's new fiber optic network and facilities offer our customers unquestionably the most innovative, advanced, and adaptable technology available," said Charlie Thomas, CEO and President of Net2000 Communications. "Phase one of Net2000's integrated services build-out is guided by our commitment to deliver the best telecommunications services in the industry. This agreement embodies that customer commitment." As the first telecommunications company to globally build an end-to-end Internet protocol (IP) network, Level 3's network is entirely composed of self-healing SONET rings and utilizes dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM). Net2000 will take advantage of this technology to meet the increasing needs of customers for reliable, high-bandwidth voice, data and video connectivity. Level 3's multi-conduit network is continuously upgradeable, with ten times the number of spare conduits for advanced technology as traditional phone companies. When new technologies are introduced, Net2000 customers will benefit with quality connections at lower costs without a disruption in service from removing old fiber. In addition to Level 3 Communications, Net2000 has entered agreements with other best-in-class network infrastructure providers, such as Nortel Networks, and Tellabs. Net2000 has repeatedly been recognized as one of the most innovative and customer-focused companies in the telecommunications industry, recently announcing plans to offer groundbreaking services such as distance- insensitive pricing and "loopless" calling for customers on its own network. Net2000 began its nationwide network build-out in 1998, activating Nortel's DMS-500 voice switching system in Washington, D.C this past month, with additional east coast cities to follow as part of their phased in network deployment. Net2000's new network is expected to offer customers up to 30% savings off their incumbent local exchange carrier's (ILEC) charges.
