*To extend the argument beyond digital cameras, the PDA market has chosen CompactFlash to the exclusion of alternative media. Eventually the Palm Pilot series will either adopt the additional functionality afforded by the CF slot or suffer from diminishing market share as Casio, HP, Everex, LG Semicon, Compaq... start to eat their lunch.
*The mp3 market will gravitate toward higher storage capacity cards with security features (for content providers) and away from SmartMedia. I fully anticipate that CF (and its svelte cousin, MMC) will dominate the mp3 market.
BTW, just to make things interesting, SanDisk will enter the SmartMedia market and, in doing so, become a "single source" of flash memory at the retail level. SanDisk has exclusivity agreements with some of the major electronics retailers such as BestBuy.
