The July 1999 issue of Scientific American discusses 2 subjects that should benefit cell phones . The first is ready for use now. It involves replacing the annoying and easily broken external antenna with internal antennas having a fractal design. These are supposed to be 25% more efficient than external snubs, can be protected inside the body of the phone, and unlike regular antennas operate well on multiple wavelengths. The second is miniature fuel cells to replace batteries. This is years away, but fuel cells are vastly more efficient than batteries. The article includes a table of the energetic potential of various types of batteries and fuel cells.
