I'd like to suggest that y'all are missing a point with all of this reference to advertising rates and the smell of doom on the horizon.

It's reasonable to assume more that half of the page views delivered by SI are seen by non-members (lurkers) with at least one ad displayed. I've done the math - even if it's 3 out of 4 sans ads, that's still one hell of a lot of ads delivered each day. On the millions, if I'm not mistaken. That's where the rubber meets the road, folks.

The recent concern started from a little low-bandwidth solicitation for the benefit of a sister company. That is now turning into predictions of what many believe this will ultimately lead to. To that concern, I say this: I know these people, and they are simply too smart to shoot the golden goose. Can you really believe that SI is going to unduly burden contributing members with high-bandwidth ads since they, we, are the source of the feed stock for the ad revenues in the first place? I think not.

Though I disagree, I can appreciate the paradigm of those who feel that a commitment has been violated. So be it. However, to assume that will lead to overly burdensome ads on member page views is simply not reasonable, IMO.

Flame away if you will.
