<In another a CEO was given big (wildly disproportionate to the offense) jail time (and no parole) as a pelt for the US Attorney. In one case they wrecked the company in the process. In the other they wounded the company for a couple of years<

It seems like you're talking apples and oranges here. You didn't identify the company's involved. But, obviously, if there was jail time that means there were criminal convictions. That is a different situation altogether and criminal actions are not going to be shoved under the carpet. At the same time, this is totally different from "trust" busting activity.

The DOJ's actions against MSFT are actually appropriate since MSFT has clearly tried to snuff out competition in ways that are not legal. In spite of that, I think you will be surprised by the way the MSFT case turns out. I don't believe that the company will be broken up or that any of the other radical solutions will be adopted. The reason is the same reason that I gave regarding INTC and this that the overall benefit to the U.S. from MSFT's dominance is so huge that it overwhelms the downside. The penalities will be punishments and new strictures on how MSFT operates..

In any case, INTC doesn't have the same problem, the fact that they are more successful than their competition is much less related to predatory practices and more to their overall effectiveness.
