Ballard wins $2.1-million Honda order for fuel cells
VANCOUVER (CP) -- Honda is joining other major carmakers in buying Ballard Power Systems' zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells.
Ballard announced today it has won a $2.1-million contract from a subsidiary of Honda Motor Co. to supply the fuel cells, related equipment and support services.
Honda R&D Co. of Saitama, Japan, will use the fuel cells in their research and development program for electric vehicles.
Ballard's commercial partners include DaimlerChrysler, Ford, GPU International, Alstom and Ebara. Additional customers include General Motors, Nissan, Volkswagen, Volvo, Matsushita Electric Works and Cinergy.
The Ballard fuel cell combines hydrogen -- obtained from methanol, natural gas or petroleum -- and oxygen from the air to generate electricity without combustion.
"Honda is a leader in the development of environmentally friendly vehicles and has an aggressive fuel cell vehicle development program," Firoz Rasul, president and chief executive of Ballard, said in a release. "We are pleased to be supplying additional Ballard fuel cells to assist them in the next stage of their development program."
Ballard Power Systems is the world leader in developing and selling proton exchange membrane fuel cells for use in transportation, electricity generation and portable products. |
