Lucent Garners Level 3 Contract MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies Inc. said it won a four-year, $250 million contract to provide Level 3 Communications Inc. with software for the Internet-based telecommunications network Level 3 is building. The software helps switch voice calls between Level 3's Internet-based networks and more traditional telephone networks. Once installed, the system will enable Level 3 to guarantee the reliability of traditional phone networks. It also will eliminate the extra numbers and codes required to make Internet-network calls. The efficiencies of using a Web-based network also will result in lower prices for consumers, said James Q. Crowe, chief executive officer of Level 3, of Broomfield, Colo. The companies said the contract could grow to $1 billion over five years.
