FWIW: "Castlewood Unveils Mac Version Of ORB Drive"

Also Increases Distribution Of Removeable-Cartridge Hard Drives

Castlewood Systems Inc. unveiled Wednesday the Macintosh SCSI version of its 2.2-Gbyte ORB removable hard-disk drive at PC Expo in New York.

The company also added Digital Storage Inc., Ingram Micro Inc. and Supercom Inc. to its list of distributors, said Martin Fishman, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing for Pleasanton-based Castlewood.

The company already is shipping EIDE internal and parallel port external versions of its drives, and expects to release a SCSI version for the PC next month, Fishman said. USB and FireWire versions also are expected, although Fishman could not give a specific time frame.

The ORB drives offer a data-transfer rate of 12.2 Mbytes per second. The list price is $199, regardless of interface.

The current ORB drives are based on magnetoresistive technology, commonly used in entry-level hard-disk drives. Castlewood currently is working on a model that will feature giant magnetoresistive (GMR) heads, Fishman said.
