Interesting comment, Ron, that opens doors to all sorts of digressions. But, I challenge your premise that governments perpetuate use of gold as currency. IMHO, governments have done everything they can to eliminate gold as a currency, and instead foist upon us fiat currencies that are intrinsically worthless. It could be argued that it is the people who insist that gold have value despite governmental efforts to the contrary. Think of some of the historical support for my case -- gold has had artificial prices set, been outlawed for private ownership, and when that didn't work, removed as a backing for fiat currencies. Still, none of this has been able to eliminate gold as a (almost) universally accepted store of value.
